Dr. Jack Newman's Guide to Breastfeeding - by Dr. Jack Newman and Teresa Pitman. My absolute favorite. If you're going to have only one book on breastfeeding around, make it this one. Dr. Newman is a Toronto pediatrician who is acknowledged as North America's foremost authority on breastfeeding. This book is full of information useful at any stage of the breastfeeding game - getting started? It's in here. Having difficulties? That's here, too. Thinking of inducing lactation for your adopted baby? You guessed it, also included. A wide range of topics and solid advice from an expert.
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding - La Leche League International. La Leche is on their sixth edition of this classic, which must tell you something about its value. It's an interesting read and well worth having.

General Parenting The Baby Book - by William Sears, M.D. and Martha Sears, R.N. Really, any book from the Sears and Sears Parenting Library is great but this one covers all the bases. A big book but well worth getting through.

Becoming the Parent You Want to Be - by Laura Davis and Janis Keyser. A truly remarkable book. It manages to supply you with all the information needed to find your own parenting philosophy and style without actually trying to sell you what they think is right!
Our Babies, Ourselves: How Biology and Culture Shape the Way We Parent - by Dr. Meredith Small. Okay, okay, not really a parenting book but so good that it deserves a place on our recommended reading list. A complete fascinating book - you're guaranteed never to look at raising babies the same way again.
